As Kansas City’s only food bank, Harvesters has worked to feed the hungry in our community for over 20 years.
With the generous support of food and fund donors, and partnerships with more than 500 local not-for-profit agencies, Harvesters moves food from where there is plenty to where there is need. Since 1979, Harvesters has distributed more than 200 million pounds of food.
Our mission doesn’t end with the collection and distribution of food. We believe that a long-term solution to hunger involves leadership and outreach programs that educate and increase awareness. The award-winning Project STRENGTH, Harvesters’ nutrition education and hands-on cooking program, is just one example of the efforts currently underway.
Without community support, none of our goals are achievable. In 2002, people in Kansas City supported Harvesters in over 700 food and fund drives yielding more than 620,000 pounds of food. Additionally they spent over 47,000 hours volunteering, and participated at record levels in Harvesters’ three major fundraising events, Forks & Corks, Chefs Classic and the Quisenberry - Harvesters Celebrity Golf Tournament. Promotional campaigns like Check Out Hunger, sponsored by the Retail Grocers Association, raised over $185,000, one dollar at a time.
Harvesters is a member of America’s Second Harvest, a nationwide network of nearly 200 food banks serving all 50 states. America’s Second Harvest is the largest domestic hunger-relief charity in the United States.
The Church of the Annunciation volunteers from time to time but is no longer on a monthly schedule.
"He said also to the one who had invited him, "When you give a luncheon or a dinner, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or rich neighbors, in case they may invite you in return, and you would be repaid. But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind. And you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you, for you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous." Luke 14:12-14
Meditation Question God's Invitation List Jesus used the image of a banquet to describe the Reign of God. Jesus' point is not about what is on the menu but who is on the invitation list: the weak, the poor, and the little ones. Who is on your "invitation list" - who are the people you reach out to and serve? (Taken from The Catholic Youth Bible - Pray It-Study It-Live It)
